Gurdwara Panjvin Patshahi is a historic Sikh shrine located near Tambu Sahib on the road leading toward Janam Asthan in Nankana Sahib, Punjab, Pakistan. Situated approximately 300 meters from Tambu Sahib, this sacred site is closely associated with both Guru Arjan Dev Ji and Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.

The gurdwara preserves the memory of their visit and remains an important stop within the Nankana Sahib pilgrimage circuit.

Historical Background

Tradition holds that the Gurus first arrived at this location before proceeding barefoot to pay respects at Janam Asthan, the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Because of this, the site came to be known as Panjvin Patshahi, commemorating the presence of the Fifth Guru.

Later, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the Sixth Guru and the embodiment of the concept of Miri-Piri — the balance of spiritual and temporal authority — visited Nankana Sahib in Har Samvat 1670 (1613 AD) while returning from Kashmir. He stayed at this very location, and his disciples later established a Gur Mela in remembrance of his visit. Historical accounts state that approximately thirteen ghumaon of land were endowed to the shrine.

Architecture and Sacred Structures

The complex contains two adjacent shrines within a shared boundary wall. The shrine dedicated to Guru Arjan Dev Ji is built without a dome, reflecting simplicity in structure. In contrast, the shrine commemorating Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji features a dome, symbolizing honor and reverence for the Sixth Guru.

The buildings stand side by side, allowing pilgrims to reflect on the spiritual legacy of both Gurus at a single sacred site.

The Sacred Tree

A significant part of the shrine’s history is linked to a tree under which Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji is believed to have rested. Although the original tree has withered away, a preserved piece of its wood is displayed in a glass case within the domed shrine of the Sixth Guru. Visiting Sangat can view this relic as a tangible connection to the Guru’s presence at this location.

Spiritual Importance

Gurdwara Panjvin Patshahi represents humility, reverence, and continuity in Sikh history. The tradition of the Gurus proceeding barefoot from this site to Janam Asthan emphasizes devotion and respect for the birthplace of Guru Nanak.

Today, while regular Prakash does not take place here, the shrine buildings remain open to pilgrims who visit for darshan and spiritual solace. The site continues to hold deep emotional and historical value within the sacred landscape of Nankana Sahib.
